Middleton groups bring colour to Cathedral

Date published: 24 June 2009

Clubs and Societies from Middleton will be helping to add some colour to Manchester Cathedral next week.

The Middleton Floral Art Club and St Leonard’s in Middleton will be amongst 100 floral artists from Greater Manchester taking part in installing flowers in and around the Cathedral.

2,000 flowers from Holland are to be arranged in what will be the biggest flower installation the region has seen for over 50 years.

The flowers, including tropical flowers and red roses, will be displayed by the artists over 24 hours ready for the opening event on 3 July.

The Very Revd Rogers Govender, the Dean of Manchester, who came up with the idea, said: “There has not been such a celebration of floral art in Manchester sine the 1950s. I thought it was time that the Cathedral, in the middle of the International Arts Festival, hosted a unique artistic event. We have asked each artist to take inspiration from key themes found within the Christian Bible, with a special emphasis on ‘Faith, Hope and Love’.”

The flower festival runs from 3 to 6 July between 10am and 6pm.

During this time entry to the Cathedral will cost £5 (£4 concessions), with free admission for children accompanied by an adult.
