Police issue bogus callers warning

Date published: 28 August 2010

Police in the Pennines are urging residents to be extra vigilant as they enter their homes, following an increase in bogus callers.

Police Community Support Officers are posting leaflets and giving residents crime prevention advice following a number of incidents where vulnerable people have fallen victim to bogus callers.

Inspector Jamie Collins of Pennine Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I would just like to stress the importance of people checking the identity of callers to their home. If you are not expecting them, treat them with suspicion and do not let them in unless you have checked ID and are absolutely certain that they are genuine callers.

“A number of incidents have been reported in the last couple of weeks where callers are claiming to be from the gas company or coming to check the radiators. We have also had reports of a bogus caller claiming they are attending addresses and checking for carbon monoxide or that they are conducting a carbon footprint survey.

“Our message to everyone is simple if you are not sure about their identity, do not invite them in.Remember, genuine employees will not mind waiting while you contact the company to check their identity.”

Residents are also encouraged to take advantage of the password scheme offered by utility companies.
