Public meeting over future of threatened South Street Nursery

Date published: 19 December 2015

Campaigners, parents and members of the community are being urged to attend a public meeting on the future of the threatened South Street Nursery.

Rochdale Council has proposed closing South Street Nursery in a bid to cut costs.

The nursery, which first opened its doors to local children 80 years ago, has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for nine years in a row.

Staff and parents will be joined by Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk at the meeting in Wardleworth Community Centre at 4.00pm on Thursday 7 January.

Mr Danczuk has raised the issue directly with the Government and called for a House of Commons debate on the impact that Conservative cuts are having on children's services.

Mr Danczuk said: “South Street Nursery has served the community for 80 years and given generations of Rochdale youngsters the best possible start in life.

“So many people, including a member of my constituency office staff, have benefitted from the excellent facilities available at South Street and it’s no surprise it has been rated as ‘outstanding’.

“The council is yet to make the final decision and this is our chance to send a clear message that the people of Rochdale want South Street to stay open.

“I would urge everyone, including past pupils, neighbours and concerned members of the community to attend and show their opposition to these plans.”
