River re-opening progressing well
Date published: 18 December 2015
Work to re-open the River Roch and expose the bridge in Rochdale town centre is progressing well and on course to complete the project in spring next year as planned.
John Percival, heritage manager at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We are currently repairing sections of the bridge on both sides using the same stone which was used to construct the bridge originally (millstone grit).
"The new walkway which will open outside HSBC has been strengthened, ready to be paved in the new year, and new York stone paving has been installed across The Butts. A section of The Butts has also now been reopened to allow people to move more easily across the town centre.
"Specialist stonemasons will continue bridge repairs in the new year and we will also continue work on the riverbed to improve its biodiversity and enable it to attract more wildlife.
"We are on course to complete this project in spring next year as planned.”
