Misba Khan climbing Kilimanjaro to raise money for poorly children

Misba Khan is using the festive period to help raise money for equipment for poorly children.

Ms Khan, who is a capital and charitable officer in the finance department at North Manchester General Hospital, is spending nine days in December tackling the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

As a keen walker, Misba has completed many treks including the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This year however, she decided to take on her biggest challenge yet and climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa.

The Khan Kili Klimb as it has been dubbed by Misba’s family will support the children’s unit at North Manchester General Hospital. The unit cares for patients aged three – 16 years with a wide variety of needs. Funds raised by Misba will be used towards the purchase of portable sensory equipment.

The sensory voyager is a portable sensory studio solution which brings sensory equipment to a child who is unable to access a sensory room. Many children are immobile in bed and the sensory voyager brings to life their single room and allows the children to completely relax, giving them complete control of the surroundings about them.

Yvonne Tunstall, divisional nurse director of women and children, said: “This sensory studio would be a tremendous asset to the children's unit as many children with long term life limiting conditions are admitted to the unit for treatment throughout the year. This equipment will not only relax them during their admission but would make their stay in hospital a more memorable experience.”

Ms Khan said: “I have worked at the Trust for 11 years and I am a mum. I therefore decided to try and complete my charity trek for North Manchester General Hospital at Christmas as Christmas is a time for children.

“I will be flying out on 16 December to Tanzania and as it is an overnight flight I will be started the trek soon after we land. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully raise a lot of money so that children in hospital can benefit from the challenge I have set for myself.

“Kilimanjaro appealed to me as it is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and it was formed by volcanic eruptions and tectonic activity. Although I am looking forward to undertaking the challenge, I am sure that I will be looking forward to my shower back at the village hotel on 26 December even more!”

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcanic mountain in Tanzania. The highest mountain in Africa, it stands 5,895 metres above sea level. On Christmas Eve Misba will arrive at the summit, reaching an altitude of 5,895m.
