Students experience the Northern Lights

Date published: 09 December 2015

A group of A Level students from Rochdale Sixth Form College recently returned from a field trip in Iceland.

Four members of college staff joined 43 geography and science students on a four day expedition, where they learnt about the tectonic and glacial processes that have formed the island’s landscape over sixteen million years.

This is the third time students from the college have visited Iceland, this year staying in a remote geo-thermally active area close to Reykavik.

The group, who experienced the Northern Lights during the first night, got a real feel for the island by luxuriating in the Blue Lagoon, touring a geothermal power station, visiting volcanos, geysers and Gulfoss, one of Europe’s most impressive waterfalls whilst touring the Golden Circle.

A-level geography students Charlie Lloyd-Jones and Callum Andrew described the expeditions as a “great trip with top people and some amazing geography”.

Graeme Dymond, teacher of geography at Rochdale Sixth Form College, said: “This was a truly wonderful and memorable trip, made all the better by the excellent attitude and impeccable behaviour of all of our students. The hotel made a point of telling me that we were the best college group they had ever had and will welcome us back next year - we will hold them to that!”
