Momentum condemn death threat against Simon Danczuk

Date published: 07 December 2015

Momentum Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton has clarified its position on the issue of Simon Danczuk MP having received a death threat over his decision to vote in favour of the Syrian air strikes.

A spokesman for the group said: "Death threats to anyone are to be condemned unequivocally and we are pleased to see the matter being taken further.

"We do not tolerate abuse within Momentum and stand by the Code of Ethics as set out nationally:

"We would like, however, to comment on the national discussion concerning the ‘abuse’ towards those who voted for this war. Let’s not mistake democratic dissent for abuse. There can be no more serious an issue than that of voting for air strikes which will claim the lives of many innocent civilians and with that, there will be an emotive response from those whose voices have not been considered, particularly in Rochdale.

"With regards Mr Danczuk’s comments on deselection as it being some form of threat or bullying, we should remind ourselves that the selection of a Parliamentary candidate is the democratic right of each Constituency Labour Party’s members to decide on who they wish to represent them on a national level.

"The real bullies are the Tories, who bully ordinary working class people every day and the sooner we can focus on that the better, rather than attacking each other."
