Beware bogus callers posing as fire service staff

People are being warned to be vigilant following a number of incidents involving bogus callers pretending to be from the fire service.

There have been two incidents over the past few days where people wearing blank identification badges and either high visual jackets or smart clothing have called at properties claiming to work for GMFRS, and on one occasion selling a fire extinguisher to the occupier.

The most recent incident happened on the evening of Thursday 3 December at around 7.30pm when two people called at a property in Chadderton claiming to work for GMFRS and asking the occupier lots of questions. The resident contacted GMFRS about the visit as he felt it didn’t seem genuine.

An earlier incident occurred on Sunday 29 November when two people called at a property in Cheadle Hulme, again claiming to work for GMFRS, and proceeded to sell the occupier a small fire extinguisher for £30.

Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, Councillor David Acton, said: “Sadly GMFRS has been made aware of two incidents where people pretending to work for GMFRS have targeted vulnerable residents, with one being talked into parting with money.

“GMFRS is working with Greater Manchester Police and Trading Standards regards the incidents and want to remind people that the Service doesn’t cold-call or try to sell items to people. If any more incidents occur they should be reported to GMP and Trading Standards.

“Also, we want to remind people that GMFRS staff members wear identification badges, with pictures, and carry warrant cards and people can ask to look at these.”
