Company boss fined for flytipping

Date published: 05 December 2015

Kelly Larkin (31), of Westwood Crescent, Eccles, has been ordered to pay over £700 after rubbish belonging to her advertising business was found dumped at a Heywood beauty spot.

Larkin admitted failing to ensure her rubbish was disposed of properly at a hearing at Bury and Rochdale Magistrates’ Court on 17 November, 2015.

The court heard that officers from Rochdale Borough Council went to Crimble Croft after receiving complaints about the rubbish. They traced it back to a Swinton-based company named Ads on Cabs Ltd, of which Ms Larkin was sole director.

Ms Larkin denied dumping the waste herself and told the court that she had left the waste at a property in Swinton with the consent of the landlord when she moved out, but she accepted that she was responsible for her company’s commercial waste.

She was fined £200 with £500 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Cabinet Member for Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Even if you don’t dump rubbish yourself, if it belongs to you you’re responsible for it and have a duty to dispose of it properly.

“I hope this prosecution demonstrates that we take all reports of flytipping very seriously and intelligence from our residents is vital if we’re to being these people to book.”

The council is still trying to establish who actually deposited the waste at the site.
