Northern pedals home with cycle rail award

Date published: 04 December 2015

Northern Rail has won recognition for its achievements in cycling at the ATOC Cycle Rail Awards.

For partnership working with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver cycle rail hubs to customers, Northern won the ‘Door to Door Journeys with Station Travel Plans’ category. Judges praised Northern’s commitment to an integrated approach to cycling across Greater Manchester.

With six cycle rail hubs now open across the region, providing 800 spaces for customers’ bikes, Northern has continued its promise to being one of the most sustainable rail operators in the country.

Alex Hynes, Managing Director for Northern, comments: “We have achieved success over the years at the Cycle Rail Awards and once again we have been recognised for our work to offer our customers a more sustainable solution to onward travel from our stations. This success is thanks to a fantastic partnership with both Transport for Greater Manchester and the Department for Transport.”

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chairman of the TfGM Committee, comments: “The award is a fantastic recognition of the work we are doing in partnership with Northern Rail to make cycling an attractive, convenient and safe way to travel for everyone across Greater Manchester, regardless of age or ability. The cycle hubs at these six stations are part of our network of 13 hubs, providing affordable and secure bike storage so people can make journeys more easily using a range of sustainable transport choices.

“We are committed to getting more residents to give cycling a go through our Cycle City programme, improving cycle routes and facilities across the region, and equipping people with the skills they need through our cycle training scheme.”
