Syria bombing vote:
Danczuk for, McInnes against

Date published: 03 December 2015

Rochdale Labour MP Simon Danczuk voted with the government for UK air strikes in Syria. Heywood and Middleton Labour MP Liz McInnes voted against.

The Conservative government secured a comfortable majority of 174 votes.

RAF jets were on standby to start bombing within hours of the vote.

Prior to the vote, both local MPs had set out their reasons for they way they intended, and subsequently did, vote - both described the decision as "tough".

Ms McInnes, in deciding to vote against bombing Syria, said she did not believe that "the case for the UK’s participation in the ongoing air campaign in Syria by 10 countries has been made under current circumstances."

Mr Danczuk, in deciding to vote for bombing Syria, cited the recent terrorist attack in Paris as a "game changer", he said: “This was an attack on innocent civilians in a city just a couple of hours travel from the UK. ISIS needs to be stopped and we can't outsource the defence of our own people to other countries.

“As a founding member of the United Nations, it is right that we stand in solidarity with France and our other allies.”

Mr Danczuk voting for war prompted a torrent of abuse aimed at him online - amongst the publishable abuse was that he is a "traitor" who has "betrayed the party, its leader and members".

Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn spoke out against the abuse aimed at pro-bombing Labour MPs, he said: “Abuse has no part in responsible democratic political dialogue."

However, an email is reported to have been circulated by furious Labour party activists warning all pro-bombing MPs they would face a no confidence vote within six months.

Mr Danczuk was in a small minority of just three Greater Manchester Labour MPs who voted for the government motion to bomb Syria, the other two being:
