No consultation on air strikes by Simon Danczuk, says Momentum

Momentum Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton says it acknowledges Simon Danzuk’s right to vote with his conscience on the Syria air strike vote today (Wednesday 2 December) but believes there has been "little or no consultation on this most serious of issues".

A spokesperson said: "Across the country, and from across the political spectrum, MPs were asked to go away and consult with their constituency before making up their minds about a vote that will mean the deaths of ordinary civilians and possibly further involvement in a wider war without end.

"Many MPs took to Facebook, Twitter, answered emails, held meetings, consulted their parties and generally communicated with those people whose views they represent in order to fully appreciate the depth of feeling on this issue.

"We believe Simon Danzuk MP has shirked his duty by not fully consulting with his constituents through social media, not answering emails, not consulting with all local Labour Party members or councillors. His sole communication was via his website in which he states ‘after consulting the experts and speaking to my constituents on the doorstep, I have reluctantly decided that this is the right thing to do’.

"A couple of hours canvassing does not equate to a consultation with constituents. This is not a respectful way to engage with the Rochdale community and, in fact, shows a considerable amount of contempt towards those who have voted for Simon Danczuk in the past.

"Democracy is greater than just voting every five years."
