Government 'calls in' Scout Moor wind farm expansion

Date published: 02 December 2015

The government will make the final decision on controversial plans to add a further 16 turbines at Scout Moor.

Earlier this year, Rochdale Borough Council approved plans for two turbines to be added and Rossendale Borough Council approved 14 of the turbines, however, the government has "called in" the decision - which means a public inquiry will be held.

Scout Moor wind farm has 26 existing turbines, the expansion would increase the number to 42, creating what is believed would be England's largest onshore wind farm.

Scout Moor wind farm opened in 2008 with 26 existing wind turbines generating enough electricity for 40,000 homes.

However, opponents are concerned the expansion of the wind farm will impact negatively on the natural beauty of the area.

Peel Energy acknowledges there is opposition but says in the scale of the population that see Scout Moor wind farm the level of objection is relatively low.
