Active Citizens get arty

Date published: 21 November 2015

Artwork created by local residents has gone on display in Rochdale for Interfaith Week.

The art has been created by volunteer ‘Active Citizens’ from across the borough who support the Council’s Cohesion Hub and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) regularly to consult and engage with communities on different issues which may affect them.

The project, in conjunction with the CommuniTea Rooms cafe, has worked to create individual pieces of art depicting what ‘co-operation’, ‘community’ and being an ‘active citizen’ in the borough means to them.

Active Citizens member Ellen Wintle-Yates ssiad: “I felt very proud of the way people came together for this project. The art work was inspiring and all about communities working together as one.”

The pieces will be on display for public viewing at CommuniTea Rooms, Yorkshire Street, Rochdale until Sunday 22 November.

Councillor Janet Emsley, Rochdale Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, said: “It is fantastic to see people from different cultures and faiths working together to create a vibrant and thriving community in the borough. Our Active Citizens really are the backbone of our local community and their bright and eye catching artwork shows just how important it is to them. We may even have some future great artists in our midst.”
