Wooden setts uncovered in Rochdale Town Centre

Date published: 16 November 2015

Rochdale Council has uncovered the wooden setts on King Street, Rochdale.

Work to reveal the unique wooden setts has been completed but there is still work to be undertaken to seal and preserve them.

The idea to reveal the setts was that of local artist John Cooke, who started a campaign to see them uncovered.

The Council has also introduced a new traffic order that means cars can no longer drive on there and is also going to make improvements to the pavements at either side of the setts.

It is understood that the nearby toilet is likely to be relocated.

Councillor Richard Farnell, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The wooden cobbles in King Street are a reminder of Rochdale’s rich historical past and its importance to the growth of our region and the country. It is important that where possible we embrace our history as we create Rochdale’s new, exciting future.”
