Extra seats for festive travellers this Christmas

Date published: 15 November 2015

This Christmas Northern Rail are adding as many extra carriages as possible to their services.

They will be providing nearly 40,000 extra seats, every weekend into and out of busy Northern cities, starting from Saturday 14 November until Saturday 19 December.

They will also have nearly 70 Christmas helpers at stations to advise you on your journey, as well as easy-to-access information online and on social media.

To help make your journey sparkle, follow their top five travel tips:

  • Allow extra time for your journey – stations and services will be busy. Some stations will have queuing stations in place, so give yourself time to get through these.
  • Be flexible about when you travel - despite best efforts, you may not be able to get on your preferred train. Trains tend to be quieter earlier on in the morning and get busier towards the end of the day.
  • Check train times before you travel. The last services of the night are going to be extremely busy so go for an earlier train to make sure you get home.
  • Be a star and enjoy Christmas responsibly - if you are getting into the Christmas spirit have a great time, but keep hydrated, warm and stay safe. Be nice to your fellow travellers and train staff.
  • If you are travelling home from Manchester in the evening  use the larger stations; Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Victoria. Do not travel from Deansgate or Salford Central. Deansgate will be closed on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm.
