Momentum Rochdale, Heywood & Middleton

Date published: 14 November 2015

Momentum Rochdale, Heywood & Middleton held their first public meeting at the Flying Horse in Rochdale on Thursday (12 November) evening.

Since the summer events of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership campaign, the results of which have seen the biggest growth in the Labour Party for 60 years, hundreds of Momentum groups have sprung up around the country to continue to bring together those who want to campaign for a Labour victory in 2020.

Two weeks after first coming together, the local group organised what they decsribed as "a highly successful, enthusiastic and determined meeting" which came together to discuss and plan for local activities.

Olwen Stevenson, one of the organisers, said: "A proposed campaign around the cuts to Working Tax Credits was discussed, along with ‘Democracy SOS’, which is the campaign to encourage people to register to vote, in order that 1.9m people are not excluded in the Government’s new voting system and boundary changes.

"We want to work with local campaigning groups, trade unionists, individuals, students and the local Labour Party to really come together locally as a community and start building something that will help to challenge the Tories at every level.

"Make sure you register to vote or you won’t have a voice.

"If you’ve been inspired by Jeremy Corbyn and his ideas, join us, join his Labour Party and be the people who will change things and make a real difference."
