Metrolink dogs ban retained

Date published: 13 November 2015

A trial to allow dogs to travel on the Metrolink network in Greater Manchester was blocked, as expected, at a meeting of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

Transport chiefs rejected calls to allow dogs on the Metrolink tram system, deciding to retain the ban, which has existed since Metrolink's launch in 1992. The ban does not apply to Guide Dogs.

The decision follows a consultation of more than 2,400 completed online and Metrolink passenger surveys.

Councillor Andrew Fender, chairman of the TfGM committee said the decision was taken on safety grounds.

"While the vast majority of dog owners are responsible, there is no way to guarantee all dog owners will ensure their dogs behave appropriately and do not represent a nuisance or, worse still, a risk to passengers," he said.

The rejection came despite backing from hundreds of residents and the RSPCA — who said dogs were less likely to be left home alone with the plan.

Lesley O’Donoghue, deputy manager at Dog’s Trust Manchester, said: “Dog’s Trust feels strongly that dog owners should not be discriminated against on public transport and should be allowed to travel on Metrolink with their dog.

“Being able to travel easily on public transport with your dog means that dogs don’t need to be left home alone as much as they might be otherwise.

“Being able to use the tram system across Greater Manchester would help owners explore the many wonderful dog-friendly parks and other public spaces the region has to offer.”
