Poppy picnics could return next summer

Date published: 10 November 2015

The organisers of Norden Jubilee Park poppy picnics are looking to host them in the village again in 2016 - this past summer dozens of people turned out.

The Bridge Inn and Café Eden supported volunteers to organise the event, which also received help from the Brown Cow, NEEVA, Rochdale In Bloom and Councillor Peter Winkler.

The Carers Choir, Star Tree Studios and cadets were among the attractions at the lunchtime picnic.

All the money collected on the day was donated to the Royal British Legion.

Ben Greenwood, one of the organisers, said: “I really want the poppy picnics to return this coming summer but I’m looking to be more ambitious. I have spoken to the Council and the ward councillors and I hope to get people on board to put on a series of events across the village.

"If anyone has any ideas, please get in touch. I hope to speak to various community groups and organisations in the next couple of the months to get the ball rolling. Hopefully, we can get a programme together for summer.

"There are some significant milestones in the 100 years’ commemorations of the First World War coming up and I hope Norden village comes together to mark them in some way.”

Simon Law, landlord of the Bridge Inn which also hosts the Bridge Inn Charity Committee, said: “We were delighted to support and take part in this year’s poppy picnics and will definitely support this year as well.”
