RBH hostel set for garden makeover

The RBH volunteers take a break from their hard work at Leopold Court

RBH employee volunteers are using their gardening skills to put healthy living on the menu at a hostel.

The large garden area at Leopold Court, off Bury Road in Rochdale, had been overgrown and in urgent need of some tender loving care.

That has now been provided courtesy of the intrepid band of volunteers who have been getting to grips with the weeds and overgrown trees and bushes.

Their hard work has already paid dividends with large swathes of land now cleared ready for the spring when a vegetable patch will be planted.

Once everything is in place, residents will be encouraged to reap the social benefits of gardening while the produce will be used to promote a healthy diet and provide the ingredients for new cookery classes.

Vegetables will also be donated to local good causes to build strong links with the community.

In addition to the vegetable patch, new plants and flowers will be used to create an attractive and welcoming feel.

A special garden party is planned for next summer to celebrate the completion of the project.

As a mutual society RBH is committed to improving lives and communities around the borough. All employees can use a number of volunteering days each year to support local projects.

RBH Volunteer Co-ordinator Daniel Turner said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped to clear the garden at Leopold Court ready for next year’s planting.

“This is a great project that reflects our mutual values and will bring benefits to the residents and local community.”
