Power network winter-ready

Date published: 29 October 2015

As winter fast approaches, Electricity North West has been preparing year-round to minimise the impact of bad weather on the region’s power network.

The network operator has spent £132m over the past 12 months in upgrading and strengthening overhead power lines, electricity substations and underground cables ready for any severe weather this winter.

More than five million customers will benefit.

Mark Williamson, operations director for Electricity North West, said: “Thankfully for most people power cuts are very rare, but they can have a big impact – particularly if you’re not prepared. Severe weather can damage the network and cause power cuts which is why we have been working hard over the past year investing and preparing for this winter.

“We’re supporting the Government’s Get Ready for Winter campaign by investing in our network, and by asking customers to think about what they’d do if they had a power cut this winter. Simple things like keeping a torch handy and making a note of our phone number can make a real difference.”

Vulnerable customers, including some older or disabled people, or those with a medical dependency on electricity, can sign up to Electricity North West’s Priority Services Register to receive extra support if they experience a power cut.
