Kashmir Day music evening raises funds for Mayor’s charities

Lala Qadeer, a renowned British Kashmiri singer, mesmerised a packed audience at Kashmir Youth Project with the Sufi poetry of Miah Mohammed Bakhash, a 19th Century poet philosopher of Kashmir and wider South Asia, at an event that raised £800 for Mayor’s charities.

The event was organised by Rochdale Kashmiri Association as part of the Kashmir Day celebrations specifically to raise funds for the Mayor’s Charities.

In attendance were many councillors and officers of Rochdale Borough Council and members of different Kashmiri community organisations, faith groups and businesses. The councillors included Daalat Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Sultan Ali.

Mohamemd Sheraz, the local youth worker who led the organisation of the event, introduced the event and Farooq Qureshi welcomed on behalf of the RKA.

Councillor Daalat Ali introduced the lead singer Lala Qadeer who entertained people before food was served.

Musicians of Kashmiri, Pakistani and Indian heritage blended different South Asian music with instruments including the gahrrah, tabla, harmonium, violin and flute.

Members of Krambler, a British Kashmiri walking group, specially came to attend this event from different towns including Manchester, Oldham and Dewsbury.

The Mayor of Rochdale, Surinder Biant thanked Rochdale Kashmiri Association and all present for supporting his charities and expressed his support for the freedom and unification of Kashmir and end of all "miseries inflicted upon people all over the world".

The event was ended with presentation of the cheque to Mayor and Mayress by Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed.
