Concerns over water level at Watergrove Reservoir

Date published: 26 October 2015

Concerns have been raised by local residents about the lack of water currently in Watergrove Reservoir.

However, United Utilities has explained that work has been undertaken at the reservoir and that they are expecting it to fill up again over winter.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We did some maintenance on the reservoir embankment this spring which meant we had to draw down the water level to allow our contractors the access they needed.

“Since then it has been drier than usual so the reservoir has not filled up to its usual level yet. Like all of our reservoirs we would expect to see it fill up again over the winter and in the meantime we can supply customers with water from our other reservoirs, such as Haweswater in the Lake District.”

Built in the 1930s, Watergrove was chosen as a suitable site to build the reservoir, due to a prolonged drought. The ruins of the old village of Watergrove lie under the large expanse of water and dotted around the landscape about the reservoir are several ruins originally from the submerged village.
