Liz McInnes slams government plans for tax credit cuts

Liz McInnes, Labour Member of Parliament for Heywood and Middleton, has attacked the Conservative government for their plans to cut tax credits for working families.
Liz McInnes MP said: "I am vociferously opposed to the Tories’ tax credit cuts. I have voted against the plans at each opportunity in parliament, and I will continue to fight them.
"The cuts to tax credits will hit more than three million families in work, costing them an average of around £1,300 every year. This is effectively a work penalty, and will make life harder for working people here in Heywood and Middleton.
"The independent Institute for Fiscal Studies has calculated that other changes, such as the National Living Wage (which is nothing like the actual living wage) and increases in the personal tax allowance, will do nowhere near enough to compensate for the loss of tax credits.
"Most disgracefully, the cuts will push an estimated 200,000 children into poverty next year.
"This is utterly shameful and completely needless.
"David Cameron and the Tories made no mention of cutting tax credits before the election, and in fact he specifically promised not to cut them. I will do everything in my power to make sure people don’t forget that, and I will continue to oppose the cuts at each and every opportunity."
