Petrus allotment vandalised

Date published: 20 October 2015

The Petrus Incredible Medical Allotment on Belfield Road has been vandalised.

Volunteers at the project found the damage on Thursday 15 October after damage is believed to have occurred on Wednesday (14 October) evening.

Extensive damage, totalling around £600, occurred to raised beds, of which much of the timber had been stolen and plants that had been planted to grow throughout winter had been destroyed.

The Incredible Medical Community Allotment is run by the Petrus Community Gardening Group. Petrus Incredible Edible Rochdale (PIER) has been open since July and has seen a great response from the local community, who have been working towards developing the land into a space, where people of all abilities can come together and grow food and flowers.

Over 200 people have volunteered their time to work on the site since July, with Petrus hoping to have the site fully operational by spring 2016. Petrus currently has around 15 community groups, in addition to local residents, already signed up to adopt raised beds and get involved.

Rachel Bennion, Project Worker said: “We have had a great response from the local community who have helped with the clear up and we have received offers of donations to help us get back on track. However we are still a long way off replacing what we have lost.

“We would like to thank those who have helped to support us with rebuilding the site and who have helped over the last three months. The community spirit that we have experienced at the allotment is inspiring.”

Petrus is currently seeking donations of timber, paint, topsoil and compost to help them rebuild the allotment.

If anyone can help with donations or for more information and details of the scheme, contact Rachel Bennion:
