Calls for disciplinary action to be taken against Simon Danczuk

Date published: 19 October 2015

Calls for disciplinary action to be taken against Simon Danczuk are being made by Labour supporters following the latest in a series of articles he has authored in the Conservative supporting Mail on Sunday that are not only critical of the Labour Party leadership but also lampoons them.

A petition asking the Rochdale Constituency Labour Party (CLP) to 'deselect' Mr Danczuk has attracted over 1,200 supporters in under 24 hours:

This petition follows another started on 19 September, which currently has over 4,000 supporters:

Labour supporters say that it is right and proper that an MP should be able to voice criticism of his party if he feels such criticism is justified. However, they say such criticism, if it is intended to be "constructive" and not "destructive", should not be voiced via the media.

That was, in fact, Mr Danczuk's own argument in 2009 when he got long standing party members disciplined and kicked out of the party they had served for decades for writing a letter to the local press asking for an investigation into his conduct following a bust up whilst on holiday in Spain with Karen Burke (subsequently the second Mrs Danczuk).

The gist of Mr Danczuk's complaint in 2009 was that in writing to the press, those members had undermined him and brought the Labour Party into disrepute.

A member of the Rochdale Constituency Labour Party (CLP), who spoke to Rochdale Online but who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "There is a lot of disquiet in the CLP about Mr Danczuk. He needs to decide if he still wants to be a member of the Labour Party, if he does then he needs to stop undermining the party leadership in the Tory press. If any local member did to him what he is doing to the party leadership he would have us kicked out of the party."

To date, Mr Danczuk has not faced Labour Party disciplinary proceedings, and in light of what happened in 2009 the question being asked is why? Is there one rule for local grassroots Labour Party members and another for Mr Danczuk?

The Chairman of Rochdale Constituency Labour Party, Councillor Allen Brett, said: "There is a procedure within the Labour Party and if a member wishes to ask for disciplinary action to be taken against Mr Danczuk then they should use that procedure and write to the CLP."

Mr Danczuk considers his criticism to be "constructive" and defends his use of the Tory press to air his grievances, he said: "I have been constructively critical of the new Labour leadership in recent weeks.

"The Mail on Sunday is a platform for me to start a debate about what our party needs to do if we want to win in 2020.

"Jeremy Corbyn has written for the Morning Star on a number of occasions, so why wouldn't I take the opportunity to write for the Mail on Sunday and get the Labour message to an even wider audience?"
