St Cuthbert's at the ‘All Schools Rugby Festival’

Date published: 14 October 2015

Pupils from St Cuthbert's participated in the ‘All Schools Rugby Festival’ in Eccles last Friday, 9 October. St Cuthbert's and other schools were accompanied by the England Rugby Squad for a fun filled day of drills, laughter, autograph signing and picture taking.

The 11 pupils enjoyed the day thoroughly and smiled endlessly throughout the course of the afternoon.

Chris Fleming in Year 8 was unable to participate in the activities due to injury, but enjoyed the day regardless. He said: “I still can’t believe I met the England Rugby Squad, I was star struck when they got off the coach, especially when I saw Stuart Lancaster. Thank you to my teachers for letting me come. It was the best day ever.”

All pupils have gained more knowledge and understanding about the game and have said the drills they participated in were very useful. The idea of the programme is to increase Rugby participation in various schools across the country.

Alicia Brookes in Year 8 said: “I used to play rugby in primary school, I’ve been brought up with it, but since we started playing it at lunch time at school, I love it even more now! At the festival I really got stuck in to the tackling as that’s what scared me before. I’m a well good tackler now. Still can’t believe I got a selfie with Sam Burgess.”

The members of staff accompanying our pupils had thoroughly enjoyed the day also. They were taught several rugby drills and more direct knowledge about the game, to later come back to school and implement it into rugby sessions.

Miss Hatton and Miss Howarth thought that the rugby festival was absolutely fantastic, they said: “Our pupils felt honoured to be there amongst fantastic coaches and the England Rugby Squad.

“The drive and enthusiasm from all pupils on the day was truly amazing, they really got stuck in.

“All were very excited about meeting the Rugby Team (staff included).

“Thank you to the All Schools programme for an exciting and memorable day.”
