Students take Whitworth Community High School motto literally

Whitworth Community High School Year 7 students hike to the top of Pendle Hill

Whitworth Community High School is taking its motto ‘Climbing Higher’ literally as all the new Year 7 forms are hiking up to the top of Pendle Hill.

Over the next few weeks at Whitworth Community High School, each of the five new forms will be undertaking the challenge and, while completing the walk, the students will get the chance to know each other better.

The first form 7G led by form tutor Jenny Cawley managed to get to the top of the hill in two hours.

For many it was the first time they had climbed the hill and some were planning a return trip with their families.

Jonathan Thorpe, 12, said: “The walk was good, it was a little bit hard when we got to the stone steps but the view from the top was amazing.

“We saw lakes and reservoirs and we could even see across to the valley where our school is.

“We had to help each other to climb up and we got to talk to each other so got to know a little bit more about each other.

“I want to do the walk again with my mum and dad and my younger brother.”
Ashana McGrath, 11, said: “It was really difficult to climb up but when we got to the top everyone enjoyed the view.”

Thomas van-der Hoeven, 11, added: “My dad and mum want me to go back
so I can take my dog for a walk.”

The forms will be seen trekking up the hill until the end of October.
