Smithy Bridge level crossing fails... again!
Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk has branded a faulty level crossing “a disaster waiting to happen” and called on rail bosses to carry out an urgent safety review.
The comments come after the level crossing at Smithy Bridge malfunctioned allowing trains to pass through while the traffic barriers were still in the raised position.

In a letter to Network Rail Chief Executive Mark Carne, Mr Danczuk highlighted a number of problems which have been reported since the manned level crossing was replaced with an automated system.
In the letter, the MP argues that the frequent malfunctions “undermine public confidence” and calls on Network Rail to revert to a manned crossing while a full safety review is carried out.
Mr Danczuk said: “This is a busy level crossing just a short distance from Smithy Bridge Primary School.
“Last week’s incident is the latest in a long line of problems since the automated system was installed. This is a disaster waiting to happen unless something is done urgently.
“I have contacted Network Rail to ask what assurances they can give to the local community that this won't happen again and to demand they carry out an urgent safety review of this crossing.”
