Development opposition conducts traffic survey
Date published: 20 September 2015
Littleborough residents were joined by local Councillors Ashley Dearnley and Rina Paolucci this week to complete a traffic survey on New Road at the location of the planned access road to service a proposed housing estate of 110 new homes.
The access road is planned to join New Road at the site of the bus stop opposite Dearnley Spiritualist Church.
Local resident James Rothwell said: “The application site provides a welcome relief from urban sprawl and helps preserve Littleborough’s distinctive rural setting. The threat of the permanent loss of our green open space is of direct concern to local residents.
"However, the wider community will be affected by the cumulative impact of this, and other planned housing developments in Littleborough. Not only will the resulting increase in traffic volume contribute further to traffic congestion on the A58, but also place additional pressure on overstretched local services such as schools and health services.
"In light of this we question the sustainability of the proposed New Road development.
"If approved this development may create a precedent to develop on other greenfield sites in, and around, Littleborough and we would encourage residents who are concerned to make sure that their views and opinions are taken into consideration before the planning application is heard."
Councillor Dearnley said: “Whilst we do not have the technical expertise nor access to the same resources that are available to the developer, it is important that the potential impact of additional traffic that will be generated by the proposed housing development is highlighted. By photographing the traffic congestion on the A58, and completing our own traffic survey, we can illustrate the chronic traffic congestion that the people of Littleborough experience on a daily basis."
