Communities urged to stand together

Local people are being urged to stand together against prejudice and hostility.
The call from Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jim Battle comes on the UN International Day of Peace (Monday 21 September), when the world unites in the name of peace and dignity for everyone.
Mr Battle said: “Greater Manchester has a proud and great history of welcoming people from all backgrounds and cultures, offering those who have escaped war and persecution a place to call home. We are an inclusive community, proud of our diversity and not afraid to turn our backs on those who seek the basic human right of a safe place to build a life and raise their families.
“These values and attitudes run through the very heart of Greater Manchester and today is a time to celebrate that and spread a message of hope as we stand united in the struggle for peace and an end to hostilities across the world.
“I also want to commend local people for their strength and spirit in welcoming people from all walks of life, while standing up to those who spout hatred and seek to divide. We must continue to stand together if we are to build a truly cohesive and tolerant society.”
