Aldi welcomed hundreds of customer into new Rochdale store as shoppers queued all night for opening

Date published: 11 September 2015

Hundreds of eager customers lined the streets to be the first into the new Aldi store on Mellor Street on Thursday (10 September).

The store officially opened at 8am, but many customers were waiting outside from as early as midnight to get their hands on a golden ticket.

The golden tickets contained prizes including a 42 inch TV, 10 inch tablet PCS and a variety of Aldi hampers and shopping bags full of goods.

Alfie Delc-Calvie, 16, was the lucky shopper who managed to bag the 42 inch TV star prize.

Following an official opening by Elaine McConnell from Springhill Hospice, 160 customers were welcomed into the store.

A cheque for £500 from the supermarket was presented to Springhill Hospice in support of the care services it provides to members of the local community.

Aldi partner charity, The RSPB, was also invited along to help promote the RSBP’s ongoing awareness campaign.

The new store has created 25 new jobs. The Mellor Street store is the third Aldi in Rochdale, with the company planning a fourth store in Littleborough.

Aldi Store Manager, Sara Griffiths, said: “We had a great turnout at the store opening and the golden ticket prizes and ‘Specialbuys’ proved very popular with our customers.

“The team and I have really enjoyed meeting our new customers, and we look forward to seeing some new faces in the coming months.”

To coincide with the store opening, Aldi will also be donating a range of products to the Moss Row Community Allotment Society to support the group’s sustainable food initiatives.
