Heywood firefighters help rescue a horse from water

Date published: 11 September 2015

Firefighters from Heywood helped save a horse and its owner after they became stuck in water.

The three-year-old horse, named Thor, was helped to safety after getting stuck in water off of Bury New Road on Thursday (10 September).

North West Fire Control received a call just after 9am to reports that a horse and its owner were stuck in the water. Firefighters were mobilised and specialist equipment from the Water Incident Unit was used to bring Thor to Safety.

Watch Manager Mark Bamford from Heywood Fire Station said: “The horse’s owner was out of the water when we arrived but Thor was still in there.

“We attempted to walk Thor out of the water but he was stuck in the sludge, so we put straps around him and set up an inflatable path and eventually we pulled him to safety.

“We want to remind people not to put themselves in danger by trying to rescue their pets from water and call 999 straight away so we can attend and use our specialist equipment and skills.”
