Robert Wild: George Cross medal sells for over £10,000

A George Cross medal that was awarded to Robert Wild, a man described as a ‘modest cotton mill worker’ from Rochdale has sold at auction for £10,200.

The medal, which was awarded to Mr Wild after he extinguished a work colleagues blazing clothing with his bare hands, was originally expected to fetch between £4,000 and £5,000.

Dix Noonan Web, specialist auctioneers and valuers of coins, tokens, medals, military and paper money of all types, held the auction for the medal on Tuesday 8 September.
