Residents across the borough of Rochdale will soon have their bins collected once every three weeks, following a decision by Rochdale Council to go ahead with the new proposals by councillors sitting on the council’s cabinet.
During a meeting of Rochdale Council Cabinet on Thursday (27 August), councillors were presented with a report which outlined the outcome of the public consultation, which was undertaken in relation to the new changes. The council received 295 responses and all feedback and suggestions in response to the consultation were reviewed by the waste management team.
However, a petition to stop the changes going ahead received 2,582 signatures from residents opposed to the changes. Concerns included missed bin collections, nappies, fly tipping increasing and medical waste.

The new collection service will see dark green bins for general rubbish, blue bins for paper and card and light green bins for mixed recycling collected every three weeks.
Properties will be given a new bin for garden and food waste and a kitchen caddy, which will be emptied once a week. Properties with large brown bins for garden and food waste will not receive the caddies.
Residents in Middleton will be the first on the new scheme, with the scheme being put in place from 20 October. Residents in Heywood will follow a week later, followed by Rochdale and then the Pennines.

The Council believes that the implementation of the new collection service could improve the boroughs recycling rate and save the council as much as £1m.
