Date published: 17 August 2015

The Pakistani flag was raised outside Rochdale Town Hall by the Mayor of Rochdale Surinder Biant, Mayoress Cecile Biant and Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Chairman, Action for Pakistan, International accompanied by the leader of Rochdale Council, Councillor Richard Farnell, councillors, representatives of various organisations, leaders and members of the community on Friday (14 August).

They sang the national anthem of Pakistan.

An evening celebration dinner was held at Castlemere Community Centre, Tweedale Street, Rochdale.

The Mayor, Mayoress, Leader of the Borough Council, councillors and members of the community, attended.

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Farnell, said: “The Borough of Rochdale celebrates the different cultures, faiths, unity and solidarity of the community. This is our strength and make the Borough of Rochdale a place for all of us.”

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Chairman, Action for Pakistan, International, who organised the event, thanked everyone for making it a success. He said: “I particularly want to particularly thank the Mayor, Mayoress, Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Farnell, Rochdale Borough Council, people of the Borough of Rochdale for their continued support for the last 25 years.

“As a Pakistani community, we should be proud of our heritage but also keep in mind that Rochdale and the UK is our first home.

“We have Asian ministers, Members of Eropean Parliaments, Members of Parliament, Mayors, councillors and staff in various central and local governments and all services are equally available and accessible to all.

“This should be the case in Pakistan.

“All of us should play our important role in contributing to improve services, work with all communities to make the Borough of Rochdale a safer place to live for us and for our future generations.”
