Problems with parking at Rochdale station subway

Date published: 13 August 2015

Unthinking drivers are causing problems for disabled passengers by parking inappropriately in front of the new Rochdale Train Station subway entrance.

Frank Salt, who is blind and has a guide dog, said: “The reopening of the subway at Rochdale station was very welcome by all users of the station and new car park. As well as shortening the walk from the car park to the railway platforms and the Metrolink stop it has given an option for disabled passengers to alight from taxis and private cars and enter the station safely, the front of the station is not safe because of the proximity of the bus stop and taxis having to turn in the roadway.

“Unfortunately some unthinking drivers have taken advantage of the subway and parked their cars in front of the entrance meaning passengers being dropped off, myself and guide dog on Saturday for example, on the wrong side of Miall Street and into the road way.

“I am aware that plans are already in place to change the road usage including double yellow lines at the subway entrance to allow 'kiss and ride' drop offs for taxis but no date has been mentioned."

Steve Reay, Head of Highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The next stage of redevelopment around the station entrance will see us introduce double yellow lines and no loading areas at Miall Street to prevent people parking directly in front of the station entrance. A level crossing will also be introduced for wheelchair users, along with improved lighting and directional signage. Work to prepare for these improvements is currently under way.”
