Victory in Japan Day commemoration

Date published: 11 August 2015

A service to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Victory over Japan Day is being held from 12 noon on Saturday 15 August in Middleton Memorial Gardens.

The service will pay tribute to all those who served in the Armed Forces, including veterans from Britain’s Commonwealth allies who helped secure victory. Prisoners of war and civilian internees from the conflict will also be recognised.

These 70th anniversary commemorations are an opportunity for the borough to show their gratitude to ‘forgotten’ veterans and acknowledge the endurance and determination they showed in continuing the fight in the most challenging of environments to bring the Second World War to an ultimate end said Councillor Alan McCarthy, Rochdale Council Lead Member for the Armed Forces.

“We must honour our heroes, remember their achievements, their courage and their dedication and say thank you for their sacrifices. I hope to see many residents heading down to the Memorial Gardens for the service,” Councillor McCarthy added.
