Whitworth Historical Society Open Day

Date published: 09 August 2015

Whitworth Historical Society held the first day of their open weekend on Saturday (8 August).

Held at the Whitworth Heritage Museum, the event took a childhood theme and played host to an exhibition of old and classic children’s toys.

Society Chairman, Brian Furness said: “We do the open weekend once a year and we do special exhibitions to reflect the year. So for example, in 2014 we had a World War one theme and this year we thought we would show off children’s toys.”

The exhibition reflected childhood for people in Whitworth during the 1950s and 1960s and had a variety of toys including Thunderbirds, teddies, Meccano and toy cars.

Brian added: “We usually hold a special exhibition and then we open up the tea room, as well as the museum.”

The exhibition also displayed old school photographs from a number of primary schools in the Whitworth area.

Whitworth Historical Society started in 1985 and is a voluntary organisation that relies on subscription and donations for its on-going work.

The exhibition will continue today (Sunday 9 August) between 11am and 4pm.
