Woman harassed on Metrolink tram

Date published: 08 August 2015

Images of a man police would like to speak to after a woman was harassed on a Metrolink tram have been released.

At around 7am on Friday 7 August 2015, a 35-year-old woman was waiting for a tram at the Milnrow metrolink stop when she was approached by a man. He did not say anything but he stared at her continuously.

When the tram arrived, both got on and the man sat close to her, again staring.

Fearing for her safety, she pretended to get off at the Oldham King Street stop. The man left and she continued to the next stop before returning to Oldham King Street.

She noticed he was on the opposite side of the platform and he started to follow her onto George Street in Oldham town centre before she ran into a shop and called police.

Detective Constable Richard Whiting said: “Although she was not hurt in anyway, this was clearly disturbing behaviour by a man who did not say anything but was determined to intimidate and follow the victim. She has understandably been left terrified by her ordeal.

“We also received a report of a man acting in a similar way on a tram travelling from Rochdale to Shaw at around 3.30pm on Monday 3 August 2015. This time a man stared and sat close to a 16-year-old girl.

“We have obtained images from the metrolink tram stop at Milnrow and would ask anyone who may recognise the person in the image to call police.

“I would also urge those who feel they may have been followed in a similar way, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 8891/9063 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
