There is currently a large fire on Corporation Road, Rochdale (2pm, Friday 7 August).

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that there are four fire engines on site and that a large number of cars in a scrap yard are on fire.

It's understood there are around 50 scrap cars involved in the fire in Rochdale. Firefighters are using jets and ground monitors to bring the fire under control.

If you're in the smoke plume please close windows and doors.

Group Manager Ian Bailey, who is in charge of the incident, said: “The early actions of our crew has prevented this fire from spreading and saved the neighbouring businesses.

“The large plume of smoke may have caused the public some concern, but we managed to get on top of the fire very quickly.

“We will be in the area for some time and local residents should expect some disruption and the closure of some minor roads in the area.”

A cordon is in place on Norman, Albion and Corporation Roads - all other roads are open.

People are being advised to avoid the area.

It is not yet known how the fire was started.

UPDATE 2.39PM

GMFRS has increased its attendance at the fire to six fire engines and over 30 firefighters. Crews are continuing to tackle the fire involving scrap vehicles.
