Riley Greenwood wins five medals and a trophy at British Transplant Games

Date published: 06 August 2015

Eight-year-old Riley Greenwood, from Shawclough, took home five medals and a trophy from this year’s British Transplant Games.

Riley, who had to have a liver and kidney transplant in 2010, won gold medals in the obstacle course and ball throw and silver medals in the 50m sprint, long jump and table tennis. He was also awarded a trophy for best overall achievement for six to eight year olds.

Riley’s Nana, Debbie Greenwood said: “He did really well. He did fantastic.”

Riley was told at the age of three that he needed a combined liver and kidney transplant with a full plasma exchange to rid him of an extremely rare disease.

Debbie said: “The transplant was five years ago this year and he is doing absolutely brilliant. You would never think that he had this transplant done.”

Riley, who turns nine at the end of August, is a huge sports fan and this was his fifth Transplant Games.

“After his transplant, we were contacted about getting involved and he has been involved since then. It was his fifth time this year and he loves it,” added Debbie.

Riley is also friends with seven-year-old Ella Chadwick, from Whitworth, who took part in this year’s games.

Debbie said: “They met through the time they spent in hospital and things so it was nice to see them at the games. They won a trophy that they shared. The Manchester team had their own awards ceremony and they were given a joint trophy which was nice.”
