Become a Samaritan volunteer

Date published: 05 August 2015

Samaritans are looking for more volunteers to help them continue their twenty four hour, seven day a week listening service. As Samaritans is a 24 hour organisation, this means you can volunteer at a time that suits you.

Samaritans are ordinary people with an ability to listen to others. Listening is not always something that comes easily, but Samaritans have a training team which can equip volunteers to use their active listening skills more efficiently.

Just by being able to talk openly and honestly about feelings in a supportive confidential way, it has been shown to reduce distress, despair and to help reduce thoughts or intention of suicide.

Whilst listening is one of the main roles, Samaritan volunteers would not be able to be there to 'listen' if it were not for the hard work and dedication of support volunteers.

There is a constant need of people to help fund raise, undertake administration duties, help with training, give talks in schools and to the public, give IT support, provide building maintenance, and even to make cups of tea and coffee.

Rochdale, Oldham and District Samaritans selects volunteers from all walks of life. Thier premises have full disabled access.

Samaritans is an organisation available to all and is non-religious in outlook in order not to discriminate against those with or without faith.
