Hospital Trust to review man’s operation death

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is to review the treatment of 35-year-old Wayne Mallinson, who died during a routine operation at the the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Mr Mallinson, from Mirfield, West Yorkshire, was injured while unloading steel from the back of a flatbed truck at Dunkerley Steel, Higginshaw, earlier this month. His arm was cut and when he was being prepared for a minor operation later that day he suffered fatal heart problems.

Gill Harris, chief nurse at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are working closely with the police as part of their investigation. We are also carrying out our own internal investigation to review Mr Mallinson’s care and treatment while he was a patient.”

The incident has been passed to the coroner and an inquest opened. The police and Health and Safety Executive are also investigating the accident’s circumstances.
