Lib Dem candidate questions Councillor Murphy's priorities

Date published: 29 November 2007

Liberal Democrat Candidate Rhoda Morley has hit out at the return of Councillor David Murphy.  On the eve of the Middleton North By-election – Councillor David Murphy admitted in an interview with a local newspaper that he was in Middleton this week to “…aid in Thursday’s by-election.”  It is expected that he will return to Alicante, Spain on Friday.

Ms Morley said:, “I wonder when anyone is going to tell the truth in this saga.  We’re told one week that he will ‘…return to his duties this week’ then the next he admits that he is back to win votes in this crucial by-election.  I am sure that voters in Middleton will be appalled at his lack of priorities.  His interview in a local newspaper gives a bad name to politics.  He claims that he is still in touch with his constituents but the fact is that no-one can contact him.  His mobile number is listed as his contact yet it has been disconnected for two months now.  I shall tell him tomorrow that he must resign – the people of Middleton deserve better.”

The Liberal Democrats have called in the services of Paul Rowen MP, Lib Dem leadership hopeful Chris Huhne MP and outspoken Euro MP Chris Davies for the by election in Middleton North in an attempt to take the seat from Labour.

Parliamentary Candidate Councillor Wera Hobhouse said: “We have worked very hard in this campaign and expect it to be very close.  I am confident though that our hard work will pay off though.  People are telling us that it’s time for a change and I am quietly confident that the people of Middleton North will get one today.”
