Solutions for pedestrian access on Rakewood Road to be presented to Pennines councillors in September

Date published: 20 July 2015

Options to fix ongoing issues in relation to pedestrian access along Rakewood Road at Hollingworth Lake will be presented to Pennines councillors in September.

The move from Rochdale Council comes after a number of incidents of people falling down the embankment at Hollingworth Lake have been reported.

In July 2014, Rochdale Online reported two incidents in which a pedestrian fell down the embankment:

Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Thousands of people visit Hollingworth Lake every year and, although such incidents are extremely rare, it is important that we find a solution to the issues along Rakewood Road.

“We’ve developed a number of options which will be presented to the Pennines Councillors in September.

"Rakewood Road is narrow with no pavement in places so people, especially families with young children, should take extra care.”

It is understood that a boy fell down the embankment at Hollingworth Lake on Saturday 11 July, but luckily his bike stopped him from falling further in the Lake.
