Players from Littleborough Rugby Club, along with family and friends of David Fletcher, came together on Saturday (18 July) to fundraise money for David.
David, 21, from Littleborough, a former player at the club, was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. He had operations to remove some of the tumour but that left him blind in one eye and left him with severe memory loss.
David’s cancer returned for the second time in November 2014 and it was found to be covering all of the ventricles in his brain. David had intensive chemotherapy treatment but had to stop due to kidney damage, and as he can no longer have any treatment for the cancer, his family want to spend as much quality time together as possible.
David’s mum Joanne Taylor said: “We were really pleased when the club said they were doing the event. Any money raised will be going towards family days out and things.
“David has a bucket list at the minute, which includes things like a helicopter ride, Chester Zoo and going on a caravan holiday so money will be used to fund those things. There are also things he wants to do with his dad as well.”
The club decided to hold the event as a way of offering their support to David and his family.
Chris Duffy, one of the organisers of the event, said: “Instead of just handing over some money, we wanted to do something where David could come along and have a good day and get involved.”
The event included a touch rugby tournament, a rugby league game and a raffle.
David got involved with Littleborough Rugby Club as a teenager and played for the club in the U15s team, U16s team and the Junior Colts.
David’s dad Steven Fletcher said: “His friends got him involved in rugby and then we decided to come along and it went from there.
"The event has been really good and everyone has done really well to organise it.”
Sam Dickinson, another event organiser, said: “We haven’t set a fundraising total but whatever we can raise will be great.
