Telegraph House to be demolished later this year

Date published: 16 July 2015

Rochdale Council is proposing to put out to tender the demolition of Telegraph House.

The building was originally intended to be demolished when the bus station and Black Box were levelled last year but that proved impossible as one tenant's lease had not expired.

Once the tenant, understood to be The Tribunal Service, has been relocated, the demolition can take place later this year and will complete the clearance programme needed to make way for the Town Centre East retail and leisure development.

Mark Widdup, Director for Economy and Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The demolition of Telegraph House is an important step in the council’s £250m regeneration of the town centre and will provide more space for new developments.

"There have already been huge improvements, including a new bus station, Number One Riverside, the tram system, and there is much more to come.

“We are making very good progress on relocating the tenant and are expecting to finalise the details of this in the coming weeks.

"After that we will start preparing a tender for the demolition of the building so we can start the final stage of the town centre clearance programme next year.”
