Rotary donate shoe boxes for children in Eastern Europe
Date published: 06 July 2015
Rotary Club of Rochdale East Club President Len Albon handed over 23 shoe boxes to the District Governor for 2015-16, Rotarian Nigel Danby, who is a trustee of the Rotary Shoe Box Scheme.
The shoe boxes contain toys such as ‘Matchbox’ type toy cars, small bouncy balls, jigsaws, fluffy toys, dolls, colouring books, felt tip pens, Lego, yoyo’s, bubble blow, etc.
The Rotary Shoe Box Scheme was originally started by North West Rotary Clubs in 1994 and was intended to provide the children of Lasi in North East Romania with Christmas gifts.
Since then, the scheme has become a national project supported by Rotary clubs, individuals, schools, churches and companies.
Gifts are now being sent out throughout the year to many different countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
Each year approximately 60,000 shoe boxes or gifts are distributed.
