Rotary Club of Middleton elect new president

Date published: 04 July 2015

The Rotary Club of Middleton have elected Sue Furby as their president for 2015-2016 and she is looking forward to her upcoming year.

Speaking to Rochdale Online, Sue said: “It's such a great honour to have been chosen as President of Rotary Middleton and I'm really looking forward to my year in office.”

Over the coming year, Sue will be fundraising for Ovacome and Communic8te and hopes to raise as much money as possible for the charities.

Ovacome is a UK-wide support network providing information and support for everyone affected by ovarian cancer. They support women with and research into ovarian cancer.

Communic8te is a local charity supporting deaf and hearing impaired people by offering education, assistance and recreation to reduce loneliness and isolation in their lives.

Sue added: “Both charities are close to my heart and I shall be planning a variety of fundraising events through the year, the first of which will be a coffee morning in Middleton. Date and venue to be announced in the next few weeks. Hopefully we'll be able to raise a substantial amount of money to help people linked to these charities."

Sue will be taking over the role from past president Keith Trinnaman.

Speaking to Rochdale Online, Keith said: “It has been a sometimes quite hectic year, but one on which I can reflect as being very productive and most enjoyable.

“The highlight of the year for me was our 81st charter night when my friends from Phil Reynolds' Rock Choir came and entertained us. I sang with them (which was a surprise to my fellow Rotarians) and we all had a thoroughly good evening.

“I am delighted to hand the reigns over to Sue Furby, and am confident she will have a fantastic year as we at Middleton Rotary continue to work in the best interest of others. Middleton Rotary is in safe hands for another year.”

During his time as president, Keith raised in excess of £1,750 for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH).

Keith added: “I raffled, collected, sang and even ran the Great Manchester Run for them. I was delighted to hand the cheque over to Angela Rowe (fund raising manager for RMCH) on Monday (29 June) evening.”

During the hand over on Monday (29 June), Ged Heatherington was elected as president elect and will take over from Sue this time next year.
